My Teaching Philosophy
As my students enter my classroom, I want them to walk in with the confidence that they can succeed and be comfortable. I want them to know that I will help them in any way that I can to be successful inside and outside of my class. In regard to student learning, I want my students to have a voice in the classroom, which can be taken in a number of ways. My students will have a voice by being able to teach themselves and others and work together in peer groups with my advisory. They also will have a voice by being able to speak their opinion and let others know their personal experiences that relate to the content or what is being taught in the classroom. I want my students to feel a sense of routine when they walk into the classroom, however, not know exactly what is going to happen each day when they arrive. The structure will be the same but the content will be different. I am hoping this gives students a sense of comfort when they come into the classroom. I want to establish a safe environment and a personal relationship with each student so they feel safe with sharing their opinions in my classroom and with their peers. Warm ups and exit tickets will be done individually, but students will be placed into groups and have allotted time to work collaboratively at least once during each class period. Students can learn so much by active learning from each other rather than me standing in front of the classroom all the time and lecturing or teaching. There will be time for lecturing and for students to learn from my instruction, but they will always have time to learn from each other.
I want to teach in a way that my students see structure every day when they walk into the classroom. I plan to set guidelines straightforward at the beginning of the year so that they know the expectations and the consequences if they do not follow them. I want them to be excited about coming to my class to learn, but also have fun while they are learning through various activities and projects. An interactive classroom can help my students to be successful. A great comparison to also add would be that I want to be the tour guide through Language Arts or Social Studies, and the students are the “guides in training” to learning the content and material. I want them to feel like they have mastered the class by the time that they leave and enjoy what each day brings when they have my class period. I also want to challenge my students to achieve success as high as they can. I want to balance the challenges and high expectations with scaffolding with the idea behind it that there will be a way that they can meet those expectations and succeed in my classroom. I hope as a teacher I can be a mentor to students and help them in any way possible to be successful not only inside the classroom, but also for the future and the world ahead.
